The rule
If you've poured the drinks, or you're simply the one who's still clear-headed, the evening isn't over until you know everybody has a safe way home. Book the car, split the taxi, walk someone to the door, or make up the spare bed.
Why it matters
Looking after people is what all of these rules come down to. It's also how you'd want your own friends to be treated, on a night when they may not be in a state to decide for themselves.
How to do it well
- Think about how people are getting home before the evening starts.
- Take the keys from anyone who shouldn't drive, however awkward that feels.
- Check quietly that people are safe, and particularly anyone travelling alone at the end of the night.
