Hold the door, whoever is behind you.

By Rupert Ashcombe · 1 minute read

The rule

If someone is behind you, hold the door. Man, woman, young, old, the managing director or the courier with both arms full. This isn't an old rule about ladies. It's a simple habit of noticing other people.

Why it matters

Most good manners come down to paying attention to someone other than yourself. A held door is the smallest possible example, and the habit tends to spread into everything else you do.

How to do it well

  1. Glance behind you when you go through a door.
  2. If someone is further back, don't make them run for it. Only hold it if they're close.
  3. Thank anyone who holds one for you, and look up from your phone while you do.
