The rule
Learn the names of the people who look after you: the receptionist, the barber, the man on the door, the barman, the cleaner at your office. Use them, and remember something about them too.
Why it matters
A person's name is how you tell them they're a person and not a function. It costs you a moment's attention, and the people concerned rarely forget it. You'll find you're treated rather well in return, though that's not why you do it.
How to do it well
- When you're introduced, use the name straight away. It helps it stick.
- If you've forgotten, admit it and ask again. It's far better than avoiding them for years.
- Make a note if you need to. Nobody has ever been offended by being remembered.
