Reply on the day you read it.

By Rupert Ashcombe · 1 minute read

The rule

When someone writes to you, reply on the day you read it. If you can't give a proper answer yet, say so, and say when you will. A two-line reply today beats a perfect one next week.

Why it matters

Leaving a message unanswered tells someone their time matters less than yours, whatever you actually meant by it. Replying promptly is one of the cheapest ways of being known as someone who can be relied upon.

How to do it well

  1. Reply to what you can straight away, and don't read what you can't deal with until you can.
  2. If you need time, send a holding line: "Thank you, I'll come back to you by Friday." Then do.
  3. Silence is not an answer. If the answer is no, say no, kindly.
