The Code · At the table

Talk to the person on both sides of you.

By Rupert Ashcombe · 1 minute read

The rule

At a table, you have a duty to the people either side of you. Give each of them your time, however good the conversation is on one side. Nobody should spend the evening staring at the back of your head.

Why it matters

The most generous thing you can offer anyone at dinner is your interest. Hosts seat people with care, and a neighbour left alone quietly spoils the evening for everyone who notices.

How to do it well

  1. Turn to each neighbour in turn, whatever the course.
  2. Ask questions and listen to the answers. Most people are more interesting after the second question.
  3. If you see someone left out across the table, bring them in by name.
