The rule
Whoever is hosting takes responsibility for the wine. That means choosing it, or asking who at the table would enjoy choosing it. What it doesn't mean is leaving the list on the table for an awkward silence.
Why it matters
A guest shouldn't have to wonder how much they're allowed to spend. When the host takes charge, nobody has to think about money and the evening carries on.
How to do it well
- Ask what people are eating and what they enjoy before you order.
- If someone at the table knows more than you, hand them the list and say so. It's generous, not weak.
- Tell the sommelier your budget by pointing at a price on the list.
